In other words, once you've got those core couple of upgrades, the rest is personal preference for example, I hardly ever use batarangs in the Predator sections, so all of their special variants tend to stay in my utility belt, except when a select few platforming puzzles demand them. As long as your health is at maximum, you'll be confident enough to try new tactics and take risks because a couple bullets aren't gonna insta-kill you as you escape back into the shadows / grapple to the nearest gargoyle. The game is wonderful at keeping the level of challenge fresh you'll be encountering new types of enemies, and variations of enemy types, right up to the grand finale. The other tweaks are less important, even some of the gadget combo moves which, whilst cool, won't be needed until much later (especially given your experience with the similar combat mechanics found in Spider-Man). I would also agree with in that the x5 combo upgrade is pretty essential. You're on the right track upgrading the batsuit's armour integrity first.
